The Little Mole (Krteček) – original by Zdeněk Miller

The Little Mole (by Zdeněk Miller)
The Little Mole (by Zdeněk Miller)

The lovely character of the Little Mole is the main and famous character in short children’ s movies about the Little Mole and his friends, Little Mole child’s books and it also became more and more popular through production of various games and plush toys. Those Little Mole movies made by its creator Zdeněk Miller were created between 1957 and 2002. The idea to create the Little Mole came up when Mr. Miller once stumbled across a molehill in his garden.  He then finally decided to draw the Little Mole as it was an original character; moles were also not used in any Walt Disney movie yet. The plush Little Mole has also made it to the space in the Endeavour space shuttle with the astronaut A.J. Feustel whose ancestors were Czech. In 2014, Mr. Miller’s daughter sold author rights to produce movies with the Little Mole to a Chinese TV Channel CCTV, so you might have seen a video where the Czech Little Mole gets on together with a Chinese panda. Mr. Miller had allegedly a wish not to continue the production of Little Mole movies in the Czech Republic anymore.

You will find a small plush “Little Mole” toy as a nice Czech souvenir in this box and also a wooden Czech toy – a yo-yo with a “Little Mole” picture on it. Both produced in the Czech Republic.

Pedro chewing gum is for lots of nowadays grown-up Czechs one of many symbols of their childhood, because these chewing gums were sold mainly in the 70s, 80s and at the beginning of the 90s. They are generally normal chewing fums with fruity flavor, but their funny packing with a little boy wearing a sombrero and colourful sticky labels and tattoos inside made them to a popular Czechoslovak candy. The production of Pedro chewing gums was renewed in 2012, so you can taste them again.
